Orcas! I love to scream this word out loud when I spot blows or catch a glimpse of dorsal fins in the distance while standing on shore near my home on Gabriola Island, BC. I am currently working on a series of these incredible cetaceans and am sharing the beginnings of a new collection with you on World Wildlife Day. I hope you enjoy these impressionistic paintings of Killer Whales. I purposefully painted them in simple surroundings to keep the focus on their individuality. I do not wish to anthropomorphize them, but I think it is important to understand all creatures have personalities and are individuals within a family. Whether we understand it or not, all creatures have a purpose and no matter what we believe, all actions, good or bad have a consequence and an impact on wildlife, our planet and on humans.
"The theme of World Wildlife Day 2020, "Sustaining all life on Earth", encompasses all wild animals and plant species as a component of biodiversity, as well as the livelihoods of people, especially those who live closest to nature." un.org
"This is an opportunity to celebrate the many beautiful and varied forms of wild fauna and flora and to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits that their conversation provides to people...There is an urgent need to stop and prevent wildlife crime and human-induced reduction of species which have wide-ranging economic, environmental and social impacts." un.org
Here's a video I made of Orcas passing by Orlebar Point in February 2017. Please join me in celebrating World Wildlife Day!
